San Juan – A Favorite Cruise Port City
A Perfect Pre-Cruise Escape
Before boarding the Celebrity Summit, we decided to spend two nights in San Juan, and it turned out to be one of our favorite pre-cruise cities yet.
Honestly, we didn’t know much about San Juan before this trip — beyond the fact that it’s a U.S. territory with a rich and colorful history. We expected a simple tropical stopover, but what we found was so much more. The city is alive with vibrant color, rhythm, and energy, with every corner offering something new to discover. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by incredibly friendly locals, music that seemed to float through the streets, and the unmistakable charm of a place that knows how to celebrate life.
It’s one of those travel experiences that proves the saying true: “You don’t know what you don’t know.” San Juan quickly went from being a port we planned to pass through to a destination we can’t wait to visit again.
Where to Stay in San Juan
Hotels in San Juan can lean a little pricey, especially during peak cruise season, but there are still great options for travelers who want comfort and convenience without breaking the bank.
We stayed at the Hyatt Place San Juan, and it hit the sweet spot — modern, clean, and perfectly located. The central location made it easy to walk everywhere — from Old San Juan and the city center to local attractions and restaurants. It’s a great base for first-time visitors who want to explore without constantly hailing rideshares.
For those wanting a touch of luxury, nearby Condado offers beachfront resorts with ocean views and poolside cocktails. On the flip side, budget travelers will find plenty of smaller boutique hotels and guesthouses in areas like Isla Verde, offering authentic charm at a lower cost.
Things to Do: History, Color & Culture
San Juan is a city that blends its history and modern energy in the most beautiful way. You can spend hours wandering the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, where every turn reveals pastel-colored buildings, centuries-old forts, and lively plazas filled with street musicians.
Don’t miss these highlights:
- Castillo San Felipe del Morro – The famous 16th-century fortress overlooking the sea, offering sweeping views and breezy walks along its ancient walls.
- Castillo San Cristóbal – Another must-see fort, known for its vast tunnels and fascinating exhibits on San Juan’s defense history.
- Paseo de la Princesa – A scenic, tree-lined promenade leading to the bay — ideal for an evening stroll as the city lights up.
- La Fortaleza and Calle Fortaleza – The iconic “Umbrella Street,” perfect for photos and people-watching.

But beyond the landmarks, what makes San Juan shine is its spirit. The people, the music, the laughter spilling out of cafés — it’s a city that feels alive. You can feel its blend of Spanish, African, and Taíno influences everywhere you go, from the art and architecture to the food and rhythm of daily life.

Let’s Talk About the Food
San Juan’s culinary scene alone could justify a visit. Every meal we had felt like an experience — full of flavor, warmth, and heart.
I have often said I am a closet (or maybe coming out of the closet) foodie – I just love to experience amazing foods from different cultures. While we had some great drinks in San Juan, for it is the birthplace of the piña colada, we also had some amazing food. From fried plantains to next-level delicious fish tacos, it was like we were trying food for the first time.
And let me just say it: mofongo changed my life. Who knew mashed plantains could become a staple in my diet? This classic Puerto Rican dish — mashed green plantains mixed with garlic, olive oil, and often topped or mixed with shrimp, pork, or chicken — is as comforting as it is delicious. So much so that I had to try making it once we got home — good, but not San Juan good.

Local favorites worth trying:
- Arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas)
- Lechón asado (roast pork)
- Tostones (fried plantains)
- Empanadillas (Puerto Rican turnovers)
- Mofongo (we saw at least 10 varieties – try them all!)
- And of course, the piña colada, born right here in San Juan!
Food in San Juan has that perfect mix of casual and elevated — you can grab a snack from a food cart, enjoy a laid-back lunch in a café, or savor fine dining by the waterfront, and it’s all going to be memorable.
Getting Around
One of the best surprises about San Juan is how walkable it is. The Hyatt’s location made everything accessible on foot, from the waterfront to Old San Juan’s historic streets. We walked everywhere — and in doing so, discovered countless hidden gems we would’ve missed otherwise.
For longer distances, rideshares and taxis are easy to find, and if you have a few extra days, consider a day trip to El Yunque Rain Forest or a visit to the Bacardi Distillery for a fun tasting and tour.
If you’re flying in for a cruise, plan to arrive at least one full day early. San Juan’s port is one of the busiest in the Caribbean and having a day or two to unwind before boarding your ship is the perfect way to ease into island time.
Final Thoughts
San Juan isn’t just a cruise port — it’s a destination that deserves your full attention. It surprised us in all the best ways: the warmth of the people, the rich culture, the incredible food, and the energy that seems to hum through the city.
What started as a pre-cruise stay quickly became one of our most memorable travel experiences. San Juan reminded us that sometimes the places you expect the least from end up offering the most.
Whether you’re planning a short pre-cruise visit or a longer stay, you’ll leave San Juan not just with great memories, but with a deeper appreciation for this colorful, historic, and heart-filled Caribbean treasure.
