Mumbai – A Favorite Port City

A Warm Welcome to Mumbai — India’s City of Dreams

If your cruise itinerary includes Mumbai, get ready for a port day unlike anywhere else in the world, and you’ll quickly discover why Mumbai is one of our favorite port cities.

From the moment your ship pulls into Ballard Pier, you’ll feel Mumbai’s unforgettable energy.  It’s like a blend of history, Bollywood sparkle, seaside breezes, and nearly 20 million people going about their day in the most eclectic way imaginable.

I have read of many cruisers that think of Mumbai as just another port stop on an extensive itinerary, but if that’s the case, they just aren’t doing it right. It’s truly an immersive experience and one of those cruise ports that sticks with you long after you’ve sailed away.

Whether you’re into architecture, incredible food, markets, temples, or coastal scenery, Mumbai delivers it all — and then some.

Where Your Ship Docks

Most cruise ships arrive at Ballard Pier / Purple Gate, part of the Mumbai Port Trust complex. I certainly wouldn’t call it a glamorous terminal (yet), but it’s efficient and close to several of the major attractions.

Good to know:

  • Expect a customs/immigration checkpoint before exiting the port.
  • Taxis and rideshares gather right outside the main gate.
  • Some tours meet inside the secure port area, so make sure to check instructions carefully.
  • The Gateway of India is only about 10–15 minutes away… or 20+ minutes away, since this is Mumbai where traffic rivals downtown New York and Chicago during rush hour.

Top Things to Do From the Mumbai Cruise Port

Here are some of the items off or our “must do” during a port visit in Mumbai.

Visit the Iconic Gateway of India: Only a short drive from the pier, this arch overlooking the Arabian Sea is Mumbai’s most famous landmark. Snap photos, stroll the waterfront, and enjoy some major people-watching — this is Mumbai at its most cinematic.

Explore the Elephanta Caves: If you have at least 4–5 hours, take the ferry to Elephanta Island and discover ancient cave temples carved between the 5th and 8th centuries. The massive three-headed Shiva sculpture alone makes the trip worthwhile.

Note: The climb includes stairs — bring water and comfortable shoes.

Wander Through Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST): This stunning Victorian-Gothic train station is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Mumbai’s architectural treasures. If it looks familiar, don’t be surprised, as it has served as a backdrop for countless Bollywood films and travel documentaries.

Marine Drive and Chowpatty Beach: This sweeping seaside boulevard curves gracefully along the coast, offering stunning daytime views and even prettier nighttime lights. If your tour ends nearby, grab a fresh coconut or some kulfi (Indian ice cream) and take in the scene.

The Dhobi Ghat Open-Air Laundry: Yes, a laundry.  I know, who wants to think about laundry while in port, since we all do enough of that while wondering if we’ll have enough clean clothes to make it back home.  But this is unlike any laundry you’ve seen before. This massive outdoor washing complex is just fascinating, with workers using traditional stone wash pens and systems passed down for generations. A great “wow, I’ve never seen this!” moment.

Markets, Bazaars & Bollywood Vibes: If you enjoy browsing, Mumbai is your playground.

  • Colaba Causeway – souvenirs, jewelry, clothing, accessories
  • Crawford Market – spices, teas, produce, snacks
  • Bandra – trendy boutiques and cool street art
  • Bollywood Studio Tours – colorful sets, musical numbers, behind-the-scenes magic

For all of you shoppers, note that bargaining skills are a must in Mumbai!

Visit the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum: Once the residence of Mahatma Gandhi during his frequent visits to Mumbai, this peaceful museum offers a deeply moving look into India’s independence movement.

What to Eat in Mumbai

Mumbai is a food-lover’s playground — and honestly, you could spend your entire port day just eating. The flavors here are bold, coastal, and uniquely “Mumbai.”

Fresh Seafood – Prawn curry, spicy crab, tandoori fish — especially in Colaba and Kala Ghoda.

Vada Pav – Mumbai’s beloved spicy potato slider. Deep-fried, flavorful, and iconic.

Pani Puri – Crispy puris filled with spiced flavored water. Messy, fun, and addictive.

Pav Bhaji – A buttery mashed vegetable curry served with toasted buns. If you want to try making this at home, here is a great recipe we found and loved, from Dassanas Veg Recipes.

Bombay Sandwich – Layered mint chutney sandwich with veggies and masala spices. Check out this video on making the perfect Bombay Sandwich from Vanita’s Corner.

Butter Chicken & Naan – Creamy, rich, and a crowd-favorite with cruisers.

Getting Around

Mumbai is enormous — nearly 20 million people — and while it’s thrilling, it can be overwhelming if you venture too far off the beaten path. The key to an enjoyable cruise day here is smart navigation.

The Best Ways to Get Around

  • Guided Tours:
The easiest and safest option. Guides know how to time traffic, avoid bottlenecks, and bring you back before all-aboard.
  • Private Drivers:
Affordable, flexible, and perfect for covering multiple attractions.
  • Uber / Ola:
Clean, cheap, and reliable. A great choice for short hops between major sites.

Areas You Shouldn’t Wander Alone

Mumbai is generally very safe for tourists, but because of its sheer size, it’s easy to stray into neighborhoods that aren’t ideal for casual visitors.

Unless you’re with a guide, avoid:

  • Isolated areas outside Colaba and Marine Drive
  • Back alleys or crowded market zones away from main streets
  • Residential neighborhoods far from the coastal tourist corridor
  • Slum areas unless with a trained, ethical tour provider

Stick to the well-traveled areas, and you’ll have a fantastic, stress-free day (except for the noise and traffic of course.)

Safety Tips for a Smooth Visit

  • Cross streets carefully (traffic rules are “suggestions”).
  • If you have sensitive hearing, you may actually want to consider ear plugs. The city is very noisy with A LOT of horns honking.
  • Keep bags zipped and in front of you, particularly in busy markets.
  • Politely decline unsolicited guides or sellers.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings in tightly packed areas.
  • Leave extra time for your return to the ship — Mumbai traffic is legendary.
