Cruise Boarding Tips
Ah, cruise embarkation day. The moment you’ve been waiting for—the gateway to buffets and overindulgence, Broadway-style shows, and questionable karaoke decisions. But before you’re sipping piña coladas by the pool, you first have to get through boarding day—which can feel like navigating an obstacle course designed by someone who really loves clipboards.
Fear not. With these cruise boarding tips, you’ll not only survive embarkation day—you might even enjoy it (or at least laugh at the chaos).
Arrive Early…But Not Too Early
If you show up at the port at dawn, hoping to be “first in line,” congratulations—you’ve just won the right to sit on a concrete bench or in a folding chair for hours. On the flip side, if you arrive late, you’ll be like someone sprinting to the buffet before they put away the bacon.
Sweet spot: In order to allow for a pain free boarding, it’s best to arrive at the time assigned to you when you complete your online checking. Personally, we typically show up about 30 minutes earlier than our scheduled time and have never had a problem.
Keep Your Documents Handy
Cruise lines love documents, whether printed or electronic. Passport, boarding pass, health form, and that photo of you in a Hawaiian shirt you wish you’d deleted. Keep them all together and ready. Bonus points if you have them in a stylish travel wallet—because nothing says “experienced cruiser” like looking organized while the family behind you digs through backpacks like raccoons in a dumpster.
The Luggage Ballet
Porters will whisk away your checked bags and deliver them to your cabin. Just remember, this may take hours. It’s best to pack a small carry-on with essentials—sunscreen, medications, and something to keep you busy, like a deck cards or a book. After all, you’ll want to make sure to pace yourself at the bar and buffet on day one.
Dress for the Security Line
Yes, you’ll go through a security scanner. No, they don’t want your belt, shoes, and dignity in a bin like at the airport. But do wear something comfortable and easy to manage—you don’t want to be that person holding up the line because you chose lace-up gladiator sandals.
Embrace the Welcome Aboard Photo
You’ll be greeted by a ship photographer determined to capture your “boarding joy.” Smile big. Don’t worry—no one looks glamorous after lugging carry-ons through a terminal. Think of it as a “before” picture, before the buffet-induced transformation that awaits.
Find Food, Fast
Once onboard, the natural instinct is to sprint to the buffet. Pro tip: the main dining room or a smaller café is often open during embarkation and will be way less crowded. You’ll look like a genius while everyone else is doing a bumper-car routine with their trays.
Don’t Skip the Muster Drill
Yes, it’s mandatory. Yes, it can feel like a mildly boring school assembly. But it’s short, painless, and very important. Many cruise lines have gone to a combination of online and in-person muster drill. This typically requires you to view a safety video from your computer or mobile device, and then report to your designated muster station, where they will ask if you watched the video and/or reviewed their online documentation. It’s become a much easier process than it was just a few years ago.
Explore Before You Collapse
Once they announce on board that you can go to your cabins, resist the urge to flop onto your bed and call it a day. Take this time to stroll around the ship while it’s still relatively empty or as others have decided to relax in their rooms. Find the location of the venues you plan to frequent, such as the pools, the gym that you might ignore, and the various restaurants and bars. We like to take this time to find our “go to” spot, that tucked away hidden location near a bar or café where we plan to spend our early mornings or late nights. You know, that place where the staff will know your name by day two.
Final Thought
Embarkation day can be hectic, but with these cruise boarding tips and a positive attitude, you’ll glide through it like a seasoned sailor. Remember: boarding is just the warm-up act. The real show begins once you’ve got that fruity umbrella drink in hand.
