Cruise Disappointments

When the Cruise Dream Doesn’t Match Reality

Cruises are my favorite way to travel—floating hotels, endless food, exotic ports, and more entertainment than I could possibly fit into one vacation. But let’s be honest: sometimes the thing you’re most excited about ends up being the thing you complain about later at the bar. Yep, we’re talking about cruise disappointments.

Here are a couple of mine…..

The Magic Carpet That Fell Flat

On the Celebrity Beyond, I couldn’t wait to finally try out the ship’s hyped-up Magic Carpet. The brochures made it sound revolutionary: a bright orange platform hanging off the side of the ship, moving between decks like something straight out of the future.

The reality? It’s essentially a large outdoor bar/lounge that shifts between two or three decks. Sure, it looks cool from the pier, and the engineering is neat, but once you’re on it, it’s really just a patio with cocktails that occasionally changes floors. Fun? Yes. Worth the hype? Not for me. I was expecting Aladdin, but got a floating orange balcony with martinis.

When You Realize You’re Boarding Late to the Party

Another one of my cruise disappointments came aboard the NCL Epic on a Mediterranean sailing from Rome. When we arrived at the port, the boarding area seemed unusually quiet. My first thought: Score! The ship must not be full—this is going to be great.

But once we got onboard, we saw where everyone was—already settled in, drinks in hand, and well into vacation mode. Over 2,000 passengers had actually boarded days earlier in Barcelona, and Rome was just a mid-itinerary stop for them.

Normally, this wouldn’t bother me. But with NCL, you need to book most entertainment venues in advance. By the time we boarded, every show and comedy performance was already booked solid by the Barcelona crowd. Talk about starting the cruise on a sour note. Luckily, a few drinks later, we managed to laugh it off (and make our own entertainment).

Why Talk About Cruise Disappointments?

Because they’re real, they’re relatable, and—after the sting wears off—they make for great stories. Every cruiser has one: the over-hyped restaurant, the must-do excursion that flopped, the port day ruined by bad weather.

And while they can be frustrating in the moment, they often end up being the moments you laugh about later (sometimes years later).

Now It’s Your Turn!

What’s the one thing you were most excited about on a cruise that ended up being a disappointment?

Maybe it was a shore excursion gone wrong, a show that fizzled, or your dream of poolside relaxation that turned into a splash zone courtesy of 37 unsupervised kids.

Share your story in the comments—I’d love to hear them, and I guarantee you’re not alone.

Because while cruises aren’t always perfect, even the disappointments become part of the adventure.
