How to Text on a cruise ship for free
How to Text on a Cruise Ship for Free (Yes, It’s Possible!)
Let’s face it — cruise ships aren’t exactly known for budget-friendly internet. As my wife will attest, one of the most frustrating experiences is disconnecting and then reconnecting on different devices, whilst trying to share a single internet connection. While most of us are happy to disconnect for a while, sometimes you just need to shoot a quick message to check in with family, coordinate with friends on the same ship, check-in with the office, or share a sunset selfie without racking up roaming charges.
The good news? There are ways to text on a cruise without paying a dime for internet or cell service. Here’s how to do it — and what to avoid.
Option 1: Use Your Cruise Line’s Free App Messaging
Most major cruise lines have free apps that include a basic onboard chat feature. These work over the ship’s intranet, so you don’t need to buy a Wi-Fi package.
Here are some examples:
- Carnival HUB App – messaging feature for a small fee (around $5 for the trip)
- Royal Caribbean’s App – messaging sometimes included depending on ship
- Princess MedallionClass App – allows free messaging between guests
- MSC for Me – onboard messaging for connected devices
- Celebrity App – onboard messaging for connected devices.
Note: Not all apps include this for free. Check before you sail.
Option 2: Use Wi-Fi for iMessage, WhatsApp, or Facebook Messenger
If you do connect to the ship’s free basic Wi-Fi (available on some lines), you can use apps like:
- iMessage (iPhone-to-iPhone)
- Facebook Messenger
You may not be able to load photos or videos, but text messages usually go through just fine.
MAK’n It Work Tip: On our last cruise, we used iMessage without a full internet plan — just using the Celebrity app. This worked like a charm as long as both of us were connected to the ship’s Wi-Fi, or in our case, everyone in our party was connected to the Wi-Fi and the app. This made it easy to keep track of everyone and to coordinate meeting plans.
Option 3: Use Airplane Mode + Wi-Fi (To Avoid Charges)
This part is critical:
Put your phone in Airplane Mode and turn on Wi-Fi manually.
Why? Because without Airplane Mode, your phone may automatically connect to a cellular-at-sea provider — and that’s when you get those nightmare roaming bills.
Steps to follow:
- Switch to Airplane Mode
- Turn on Wi-Fi
- Connect to the ship’s network
- Use the cruise app or any messaging app that works over Wi-Fi
Option 4: Use Cellular When in Port (But Carefully)
If you’re in port and your phone plan includes international texting, you may be able to send/receive texts via your mobile network — just like on land. Many U.S. carriers (like T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon) offer limited free international texting.
But be careful — this only applies when you’re on land and using a partner network, not while you’re at sea.
What Not to Do:
- Don’t send SMS texts (green bubble) over cellular-at-sea — these aren’t free and will cost you.
- Don’t use mobile data at sea unless you have an international cruise plan (most don’t).
- Don’t forget to switch to Airplane Mode as soon as you board the ship.
Final Thoughts: Stay Connected Without the Cost
Cruise lines are getting smarter — and more generous — with how they help passengers stay in touch. While you probably won’t be live-streaming your sea day for free, basic messaging is possible without buying the full-blown Wi-Fi package.
Whether you’re coordinating a group for happy hour or just letting your kids know you made it on board, it’s a great way to stay connected without sinking your budget.
