7 Stages of Waiting for Your Next Cruise
Booking a cruise is easy. Waiting for it? That’s an emotional journey all its own.
From the moment you click “confirm booking” to the day you finally step onboard, cruise lovers tend to cycle through a familiar set of thoughts, feelings, and rituals. I get to watch my wife go through these stages on a regular basis. Some stages are joyful, some are obsessive, and at least one involves checking the weather forecast far earlier than any reasonable person should.
If you’ve ever found yourself refreshing your cruise countdown app or casually mentioning your sailing date to strangers, congratulations — you’re right on schedule.
Here are the Seven Stages of Waiting for Your Next Cruise, according to people who have absolutely been there.
Stage 1: The Booking High
This is the honeymoon phase. You’ve booked your cruise, received and double-checked your confirmation email, and everything feels possible. You’re already picturing those special moments at sea, that first walk onto the ship (and avoiding eye contact with the photographer), and meals you haven’t even tasted yet.
At this stage, life feels just a little bit lighter. Work stress starts to fade slightly. Even mundane tasks feel more manageable because, and this is key, you have a cruise booked.
You may already start browsing future excursions “just to look,” even though your sailing is six months to a year away.
Stage 2: The Research Spiral
Once the initial glow settles, the research begins. And not just casual research — deep research.
You’re watching ship tours, reading reviews, comparing cabin layouts, and learning more about your ship than the people actually sailing it that week. You know which dining venues require reservations, which ones are hidden gems, and have details on each of the specialty restaurants.
This is often when people stumble into posts like Is The Key, Priority Access, or Faster to the Fun Worth It?, trying to decide which upgrades are genuinely worth it and which are just shiny temptations.
Stage 3: The Countdown Obsession
At some point, the countdown becomes official. Whether it’s an app, a widget, or a handwritten note on the fridge, you now know exactly how many days remain.
You start measuring time as it relates to the cruise:
- “Two weeks after the cruise…”
- “Before the cruise…”
- “Right when we get back…”
This stage is marked by equal parts excitement and impatience. You’re close enough to feel it, but still far enough away to be mildly annoyed by the calendar.
Stage 4: The Packing Daydream
You’re not packing yet. But you’re thinking about packing.
At least for my wife, this means that outfits are mentally assembled, revised, and abandoned. You picture yourself walking the promenade, heading to dinner, sitting in the theatre, or lounging on deck, all in outfits that may or may not already exist in your closet.
You might also start visiting destination-specific content, like Rome – A Favorite Cruise Port, imagining what you’ll wear and eat in port, long before luggage is actually involved.
Stage 5: The “Is It Too Early to Be This Excited?” Phase
This is the stage where your excitement becomes very real, and very visible to all that are around you.
You casually mention your cruise in conversation…often. You begin checking weather forecasts for each of the ports weeks (or months) in advance, knowing full well they mean nothing this far out.
You may also start questioning completely unrelated life decisions, while thinking, “We should really enjoy this cruise… who knows when the next one will be.”
Spoiler: you’ll book another one eventually…and my guess is shortly after your return.
Stage 6: The Final Week Frenzy
Now it’s happening. Documents are printed (and backed up digitally). Bags appear in the corner of the room. You double-check passports even though you checked them yesterday.
Your focus at work becomes questionable at best. Your brain is already onboard, deciding between which deck to explore first, checking out the gym (yes, I do this), and for us, learning where the best seats will be in theatre.
Stage 7: The Eve-of-Cruise Calm
Let’s hope you arrived at your port city the day before your cruise, and if so, the night before the cruise will be surprisingly peaceful.
The waiting is almost over. There’s nothing left to plan, nothing left to research. You’ve done what you can, and now the only thing left is to get there.
You fall asleep knowing that tomorrow brings that unmistakable feeling — stepping onboard, hearing the ship’s ambiance for the first time, and realizing that all the waiting was worth it.
Final Thoughts from MAK’n Waves
Waiting for a cruise is part of the experience. It’s anticipation layered with planning, daydreaming, and just a touch of obsession — and honestly, that’s part of the fun.
Each stage reminds us why we cruise in the first place: not just for the destinations or the ship, but for the feeling of having something pretty awesome on the horizon.
And if you’ve already found yourself wondering when your next cruise will be while reading this… well, that might be Stage One all over again.
